London Film School Hands-On Learning

Why a Hands-On Learning Approach to Filmmaking Makes Sense

Film school is one of those places where you really should learn by doing. You can read about sound technique and film editing, but you don’t really have that “aha!” moment until you do it. And the more you do something, the more mistakes you make. And that gives you the opportunity to learn from those mistakes, and hone your craft.

Here at the London Film School, we have a hands-on learning approach to filmmaking. LFS is built around a conservatory model, providing a hothouse environment for intense creative work.

The conservatory model features:

  • Small classes
  • Learning through doing
  • Nurturing growth and imagination

“The best way to learn a thing was to do it, he had found; sails or scrolls, it made no matter.”

George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords

Experience-based learning, or hands-on learning, is the surest way for LFS to ensure our MA Filmmaking graduates have the skills they need to not only succeed, but to excel in the industry. In our program, there is no pre-specialization. We believe that in order to find your filmmaking voice, you need to understand filmmaking as a whole. That is, you will experience and obtain a full education in all the craft areas. The hands-on learning experience we offer here is built around the notion that filmmaking is a collaborative process, not a product of any one individual. Our students engage in all disciplines, with their fellow students and staff.

During your two years here, you will be fully trained in nine different craft areas:

  • Directing
  • Screenwriting
  • Producing
  • Cinematography
  • Sound,
  • Editing
  • Production Design
  • Music
  • Screen Studies

Students will learn from professional, working filmmakers. Our staff and visiting lecturers are connected to the UK and global film and television industries. They bring their experiences into the everyday practice of teaching here at LFS. You will balance mastering technical skills with creative development of ideas. Alongside that, you will also engage with the new challenges facing screen storytellers in an ever-changing landscape.

The London Film School facilities fully support the hands-on learning approach to filmmaking. This includes fully functioning, state of the art equipment, such as:

  • Film Studios
  • Camera Department with 8 Aatons and our Alexa
  • Lighting Equipment
  • Fully Equipped Design Studio
  • Editing Suites with Avid and Final Cut Pro
  • Sound Suites
  • Production Office
  • The LFS Moodle

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

Pablo Picasso

For each craft area, you will gain hands-on experience. You will work on a minimum of 10 films before you graduate, allowing you to explore each avenue. Learning all of the technical details of each craft area, and how everything works together will make you a stronger director, screenwriter, producer, sound engineer — whatever path you choose.

Showcasing your films, along with your skills-filled resume will make you a well-rounded addition to any film, television, or streaming show.
